The temptation of Spanish Brittany

“Spain may already be a well-known destination, but the north-western part of the country is only just beginning to attract the attention of investors, who are being lured by its attractive prices”

While the best-known regions remain the most attractive - the Costa del Sol, the Costa Blanca... - one region is beginning to attract the attention of investors: the north-western part of the country, nicknamed 'Spanish Brittany'.

The region, which includes the autonomous communities of Asturias, Cantabria and Galicia, has features not unlike those of Brittany: the Atlantic Ocean, wind, cliffs, green hills and picturesque valleys, with the Pyrenees as a backdrop!

"The interest shown by foreigners dates back to the post-Covid era, but the area is already well known to Spaniards: many Madrilenians have their second homes here. It's a region where you can go from the mountains to the beach in a day, with a more temperate climate than the rest of the country". It's a consideration that is weighing more and more heavily in the choices made by buyers who are aware of climate change.

In fact, the figures don't lie: "sales to non-Spaniards rose last year in Asturias by more than 34%, and in Galicia by more than 31%". Of course, you have to expect to face the rain during the winter, but to compensate, you can also go skiing... More than affordable prices

More than affordable prices

As the region is still largely untouched by the property boom, you can find everything here, at almost any price: "restored village houses, seaside villas, flats in modern residences, traditional farmhouses in need of renovation, even entire villages... All with a great deal of charm, for prices ranging from 20,000 to several million euros".

In Cantabria, for example, you can find a 250 m2 Haussmann-style home for €550,000 in the centre of Santander, the region's largest city; in the hinterland, typical 230 m2 houses with eight rooms and a large plot of land sell for €200,000.

Further east, towards Laredo, you can find a 300 m2 stone house in need of renovation for just 50,000 euros. In Galicia, the best-known city is undoubtedly Santiago de Compostela, where a beautiful 400 m2 stone house in the old town, with no work required, sells for 600,000 euros.

And in Asturias, in the west of the country, at Playa Lastres, just outside the town of Lastres, a 218 m2 house with sea views, but in need of redecoration, is selling for 230,000 euros...

The treasures of the hinterland !

And for those who don't mind a bit of work, there are houses in the hinterland with almost 100 m2 to restore completely, for just over 10,000 euros.

• "The further you get from the coast, the lower the prices. From 20 to 30 kilometres from the sea, you're looking at around €1,200 per square metre; beyond 50 kilometres from the shore, you're looking at between €500 and €1,000."
