Gardens by the sea in Blanes
Whether your partner likes the beach or the mountains, the countryside or the city: Catalonia has it all! You can't go wrong choosing this Spanish destination for a romantic gift or a trip for two. The sensuality of the Mediterranean and the abundant nature of the interior of this region offer a magnificent catalogue of treasures to visit with that special someone. Here are some of the best romantic getaways in Catalonia.
Just over 70 km from Barcelona and around 45 km from Gerona, two botanical gardens delight visitors with their incomparable beauty. The perfect place to take some great photos! The best-known of the two, Marimurtra, is home to plant species from all over the world, set against unforgettable backdrops and magnificent views of the cliffs. Blanes, once a fishing village, is the gateway to the Costa Brava. The unique landscape of this part of Spain can already be felt from the roads offering panoramic views. The elegant shapes of the kiosk dedicated to Carlos Linneo, with its breathtaking views of the steep coastline, and the colours of the parrots that fly freely in the area, add a very special touch to this garden and make it a place to dream about.
Another must-see garden in Blanes is Pinya de Rosa. This is a wonderful tropical garden that transports you to exotic lands. Cacti and succulents are the stars here. Thousands of species can be found here. A stroll through these gardens is also an opportunity to discover one of the most remarkable villages on this coast, Blanes. If you'd prefer to discover another fairytale garden, the Santa Clotilde gardens in Lloret de Mar are just around the corner.

Sant Miquel del Fai, the bowels of the earth
A monastery nestling in the rock, caves, waterfalls, forests... All this awaits you in Sant Miquel del Fai , just an hour from Barcelona! A peaceful spot where nature and human action go hand in hand to form a unique work of art that deserves a place on this list of romantic getaways in Catalonia.
All this is part of the Cingles de Bertí, a protected area whose rocky escarpments stand out, a geological beauty that adds even more magic to the place. The spectacular 300-metre Rio Tenes waterfall hides a gallery of stalactites and stalagmites that can be visited to watch the water fall right before your eyes. From here, a path leads to the former hermitage of Sant Martí, and on to the monastery enclosure, an impressive monumental complex that plunges us into another world.
Very close by is Les Tosques cave, another place that offers a spectacle of rock and water, the protagonists of this place. The human footprint has been integrated into the landscape over the centuries, as can be seen on the Romanesque bridge over the Rio Rossinyol or on the arch that gives access to the Casa Prioral, built into the rocks.
If it has rained a lot, it is possible to see the Rossinyol jump, another hypnotic waterfall, just above the Cueva de Sant Miquel.
After admiring so much beauty, you might like to take a rest in the Plaza del Repòs, next to the statue of the writer Josep Pla. Just there, half-hidden, you can see the Lac de Les Monges.
The medieval enchantment of Girona
Girona is a city, which means movement, bustle and excitement. But Girona is a city like no other. Few provincial capitals have such a wonderful old town as Girona. As soon as you enter the Barri Vell, the silence fills you with a sense of being transported to a medieval fairytale. The best way to enjoy this historic centre is to lose yourself hand in hand in the labyrinth of ancient streets, exploring surreal corners that take you back in time. Don't forget to climb the never-ending staircase to the beautiful cathedral!
Another must-see is the Arab baths, a delightful synthesis of Christian and Muslim art. They will immerse you in an intimate and sensual atmosphere.
The city offers modern spas where you can relax body and mind, emulating the ancient inhabitants. Girona can be reached by car in an hour and a quarter from Barcelona, and by high-speed train in just 40 minutes.
Toasting in the Montsant sierra
In the heart of Catalonia, an hour from the city of Tarragona and two from Barcelona, there's a place where the red earth and the sunsets impress every visitor. The Sierra de Montsant is a nature park characterised by its supernatural rocks and abundance of sublime landscapes. The region is a paradise for nature-loving couples, but the appeal doesn't stop there.
It lies in the middle of a triangle that is home to some of the most spectacular medieval monasteries, such as Poblet and Santes Creus. Closer by, the Carthusian monastery of Escaladei offers a setting of decadent beauty: the sublime union of heritage and land.
